Pre-Conference Workshop on March 26, 2008
"Keeping up on Japan", explores the challenges facing higher education in Japan today. Particular attention will be paid to new international education initiatives in Japan. This workshop will address the current status of Japan’s Higher Education System and the nation’s evolving International Education strategies. Speakers will address the role of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in shaping Japanese higher education and the promise and problems facing Japanese educators in a global world.
Welcome Reception on 26 March 2008
Hosted by Waseda University, the traditional Japanese dinner and performance will introduce you to Japan's culture, while providing you with a great opportunity to greet colleagues from institutions worldwide and start networking.
Plenary Sessions
Opening Ceremony on 27 March 2008
The official launch of the 3rd Annual Conference & Exhibition of APAIE and the 40th anniversary of JAFSA will be celebrated in this joint opening ceremony with warm welcomes of Prof. Doo-Hee LEE, President of APAIE, and Prof. Katsuhiko SHIRAI, President of Waseda University and JAFSA.
Keynote Speeches on 27 – 28 March 2008
Three speeches from prominent leaders, government officials, and education professionals are followed in order to acquaint attendees with the conference theme, "The Next Wave in Asia-Pacific Higher Education" and stimulate the two-day discussion ahead.
University Presidents' Roundtable: "What's next in Asia-Pacific Higher Education"
on 27 – 28 March 2008
Presidents and Vice Presidents from regional institutions of higher learning will share various insights and institutional views on the future, direction, vision of regional higher education.
Concurrent Sessions on 27 – 28 March 2008
50 sessions participated by over 160 influential speakers are to be held during the two-period of the main conference on various topics
Trends and Change by region and country
Regional and country updates on the most pressing and interesting issues are to be presented. Not only Asia but Europe and America are covered in this track.
National Plans, policies and strategies
The role of government policies and strategies is very important in the region. Some countries are driven by government plans, and in others the relationship between government and institutions of higher learning is crucial. Sessions exploring this very issue in New Zealand, Southeast Asian countries, Japan, and China are offered.
Partnerships
Partnerships in various levels are explored: institution to institution partnership, research-education-industry partnership, cross-continent partnership, etc.
International Office & professionals
The sessions in this track will cover the issues of managing international office, changing role of international offices and its staffs at universities, professional and career development of professionals and leadership.
International Student Services
From student orientation and admission to credential evaluation, academic integrity, and crisis management, learn and share how-to's of international student services offered by experts and long-time professionals of region.
Student Mobility
Trends and changes of student mobility from the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and East Europe in relation to Asia-Pacific will be presented. Also, various attempts of new programs development including short summer programs will be introduced.
