APAIE Activities in Basel for EAIE Conference

APAIE had its presence in Basel, Switzerland during the 18th Conference & Exhibition of EAIE, European Association of International Education, a sister organization, from 13 to 16 of September. In addition to these activities, APAIE promoted the Association and Conference 2007 at the booth shared with Korea University.

APAIE will continue to present itself in similar ways at EAIE and NAFSA conferences each year and reach out to those interested in Asia-Pacific higher education and its internationalization.

Wine & Cheese Reception
A Wine & Cheese Reception was hosted by APAIE on Thursday, 14 September 2006 from 2-4pm. Some 200 interested people attended the reception and learned of the Association, shared ideas, and met those already attended APAIE Conference this March and leaders of the Association.




Session
A session, ¡°An update on Asia Pacific Higher Education¡± was presented by APAIE on Friday, 15 September 2006 from 4:15 to 5:45pm. Mr. Thomas Wu had opened the session; Prof. Jack Cheng who was a speaker at the pre-conference workshop on China, showcased the workshop in Seoul by presenting again on Chinese Higher Education Systems; Ms. Puay Swan Kwek of National University of Singapore gave a talk on NUS¡¯ global initiatives as an example of Asia-Pacific HEI¡¯s internationalization and networking efforts; Jeongmin Lee presented on the Association and Conference 2007; and Prof. Doo-Hee Lee closed the session. The session was attended by some 100 participants, including presidents of EAIE, NAFSA, and AIEA.

Opening Ceremony
President Doo-Hee Lee spoke at the Opening Ceremony of EAIE on Thursday, 14 September 2006 at 5:15pm. Followed by the plenary speech and opening remarks by Ms. Antoinette Charon Wauters, President of EAIE, in his address to some 2,300 conference participants, Prof. Lee congratulated EAIE¡¯s 18th annual conference, emphsized the future collaboration between EAIE and APAIE, and supported the establishment of the Council for International Education Associations. It was a significant moment for APAIE to stand by EAIE as a sister organization, the European association.



APAIE-EAIE Meeting
Leaders of APAIE and EAIE met on Friday, 15 September 2006 from 10:30 to 11:30am to discuss possible ways of future collaboration. Those attended were Prof. Doo-Hee Lee, Mr. Thomas Wu, Mr. Christopher Madden, Ms. Puay Swan Kwen, Ms. Jeongmin Lee of APAIE; and Ms. Antoinette Charon Wauters, Ms. Finona Hunter, Mr. Alex Olde Kalter of EAIE. The two associations had signed a Declaration of Intent for Collaboration at our March Conference and had communicated and worked together since. Many ways for mutual collaboration are identified and will be discussed further for more detailed plans.
